U.S. DEFENCE BUDGET

Appropriations A Record (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, June 26. The House of Representatives appropriations committee has recommended that the Defence Department be given a record 58,610 million dollars for the Vietnam war and other activities, during the 1967 financial year starting on July 1. The defence budget recommendations, subject to full House approval this week, represent about 1000 million dollars more than the current record budget, including a supplementary 11,000 million dollars appropriation passed in the middle of the year. The committee’s recommendation —nearly 1000 million dollars more than President Johnson requested—was made on the assumption that the Vietnam war would continue through the year.

Oil For Zambia.-—Britain’s Royal Air Force has now flown two million gallons of oil into Zambia, said the Defence Ministry today. Two Britannia transport aircraft have flown about two million miles on 900 flights to Zambia since the fuel lift began last December.—London, June 26.
