Subritzsky House
Sir,—As I visited the Subritsky House at Houhora Heads, Northland, last month and obtained the history of it, I would correct your statement that it has been handed over to the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. A descendant of the Subritzsky family, Mr. Wilfred Wagener, recently purchased the farm and house for a substantial sum which was beyond the means of the trust. He is restoring the place to its former standard and will probably appoint a caretaker for the farm and for visitors who are asking to visit it. Subritzsky House was the first house built by white people north of Awanui, and they did the first farming in the far north. They ran a store, known as L. and H. Subritzsky Store; “Ohere,” not Houhora, as it is now known. Louis Subritzsky was a J.P., and a copy of “Duties of a Justice,” 1870, is still in the house. The house was built of stone ferried across from Mount Carmel, the interior lined with ti-tree laths, finished with pug clay, which are still in excellent condition.—Yours etc., GLADYS M. GOODALL. June 21, 1966.
