“The Press” In 1866

June 27 LOOSE SHlP.—Accounts have come to our ears, and are matters of daily conversation in the town, of proceedings on board the John Temperly on her voyage to this place, especially among the single women, which call for a stringent enquiry on the part of the Government We abstain from giving publicity to any of the stories which are flying about in the belief that the Government must have heard quite enough to show the Immediate necessity

for such an Inquiry. His Honor the Superintendent is now at Hokitika, and will probably return to Christchurch before he goes up to the Assembly; but if not, we hope no time will be lost in communicating with him on the subject, and obtaining his authority for an investigation, which a very little enquiry will show to be necessary. In the hope that such an investigation will be held, we abstain from all comments on the character of the immigrants, or the management of the ship.
