Hornby Extended Rugby League Lead

Hornby increased its lead in the Canterbury Rugby League championship to six points when the other teams continued to knock each other out of the reckoning.

Three favoured teams, Marist, Addington and Sydenham, were defeated, but it was Addington’s loss to Kaiapoi that caused the greatest surprise.

Kaiapoi’s 26 points constituted its largest score since it was promoted to senior football in 1964. The score bettered its previous best, against Linwood this season, by three points. With a monopoly of possessions from the scrums, Linwood deserved its win over Marist, although Marist led until late in the second half. Hornby was the only team to play to form with a win over Papanui and Christchurch moved from the bottom of the table with its defeat of Sydenham. Results:— Hornby 22, Papanui 12. Linwood 17, Marist 8. Kaiapoi 26, Addington 23. Christchurch 18, Sydenham 8. Championship points are: —

were the most impressive of the Linwood forwards. In the back-line Kereopa had his best game for some time. His running was stronger and the only blemish on his play was his inclination to wander out of position. M. Morgan was dangerous on the wing, using his side-step well. Of the Marist backs, Smith and R. S. J. Irvine did a lot of work on defence and Irvine’s line-kicking was effective. Referee: Mr T. C. Houston.

moves to score three tries. Hornby had more pace in the forwards than Papanui, which was a little below strength in the pack. Papanui also missed the strong running of the centre. S. Dunn. Hornby's most effective back was J. Bray, his incisive running allowing his outside men plenty of room. I. Drayton also added Impetus to the attack with his frequent moves into the line from full-back. Of the forwards. D. Condick ran with his usual assurance and D. Moore was also prominent in several runs. A replacement during the game, P. Tongue, added some enthusiasm to the winning pack. Papanui's two best backs were the scrum half, G. Clarke, and the centre, A. Amer. The best try of the game was scored by Amer in a fine solo run. Referee: Mr R. Pont.
