ROBIN HOOD CLUB
Boys’ Help For Handicapped Six Christchurch boys all under 12, have formed themselves into the Robin Hood Club to help the Intellectually Handicapped Children’s Parents’ Society. On Thursday, they presented £7 to the president of the society, Mr C. H. G. Curragh. Mr Curragh said the money would go towards the new hostel which the society hoped to build on its property in Patten street. The boys are Michael Labrum, Evan Fahey, Carey Blazey, Jimmy Boyd, Bruce van Nieuwkerk and Stuart Tatrell. At first the boys said they had decided to help a different organisation each week, but after they had discussed their ideas with their parents, they had agreed to give the money to the society. The first meeting of the Robin Hood Club was on March 29.
To raise the money the boys hold a stall once a month, usually on a Friday afternoon at the home of one. They do much of the work themselves and sell mainly clothing, toys and food. They hope to be able to expand the membership as more people become interested. “The more people that become interested in the type of work the boys are doing the better,” said Mr Curragh. “It Is amazing the number of adults, some of them with handicapped children, who do not know of the society. At the moment we have 22 children at the school, but only two teachers.”
•Mr Curragh said other children had also been making efforts to help the society.
