HARRIER’S TARGET
Attempting Hat-Trick
The Canterbury steeplechase champion, J. D. Macdonald, will try for his third successive win in the senior division of the annual Holloway memorial harrier races today.
Macdonald is the only runner to have won the event in two successive years.
Regarded as the most gruelling test of the Canterbury cross-country running programme, the 12.3-mile senior race has attracted 66 entries, representing 16 teams. From the start, at the Rapaki Scout Den in Garlands road, the 4.1-mile circuit includes roads, paddocks, bog, hill, and creeks, giving a total of 7.8 miles across country and 4.5 miles of road. Christchurch is favoured to win the teams contest, which is for teams of four with three counting in the compilation of team points. This team includes two previous winners of the race, K. E. Williams and W. K. Kennedy.
Others in the team are M. Smith and K. Leith. Kennedy and Williams could figure prominently in the run for individual honours also.
Forty-five juniors are entered for a race to be run over one lap of the senior course. Last year’s winner of this division, D. Armishaw (Technical) has entered again and another strong contender is expected to be J. Tomlinson (New Brighton), winner of the colts race last year.
