ROCK HIT COTTAGE
‘Council Not Liable’
A complaint by Mr L. W. Gazzard that a rock from the hillside above had crashed through the wall of his cottage at Hayes Bay, near Charteris Bay, was considered by the Mount Herbert County Council at its meeting yesterday. He said the rock weighed a hundredweight and a half. There were rocky outcrops that could be dislodged by children, or, as seemed likely in this case, by the activities of persons taking rock. Cr. C. C. Manson said he had visited the scene. It looked as if someone had taken rock from the bluff above the cottage. “They must have let one go, or disturbed a rock so that it went of its own accord,” he said. “We can’t control rocks on private property,” said the chairman (Mr J. H. Mathias). The clerk (Mr W. H. Scrimgeour) said Mr Gazzard could complain to the police, or take civil action. It was decided to tell Mr Gazzard that, as the council was not responsible, he should raise the matter with the land-owner.
