Fire Damages House

Two rooms on the ground floor and the basement of a house at 34 St. Andrew’s Hill road were badly damaged by fire early yesterday afternoon. The owner, Mr F. S. Meluish, had his hair singed when he attempted to put out the fire. His wife, overcome by smoke, was forced to leave the house when she was dialling the fire brigade. The Christchurch brigade received the call at 12.51 p.m. Two units from Woolston attended. They were later supported by a relief crew from the Central station. Graeme Fuller, aged 16, working in a television workshop in the basement, had to smash a window to escape from flames and smoke. Mr and Mrs Melhuish broke windows and threw property out in an effort to save personal effects.
