Canada And N.A.T.O.
Sir,—The inspiring courage of Mr Pearson in his speech at Abraham Lincoln’s home town, placing the major share of blame for recent happenings in N.A.T.O. on the United States, calls for comment. The Pentagon during the last decade has disregarded commitments under the Western European Union and spent huge sums on the illegal rearmament of West Germany. Perhaps the Pentagon-Gehlen agreement was the most reprehensible, being contrary to Allied war aims and Nuremberg pretensions: also the supply of nuclear warheads and equipment of submarines. Perhaps this movement for European security sees survival as its responsibility, and before long the Scandinavian countries will join in an organisation which will recognise the moral value of money as a medium of exchange for ian orphaned and starving 'humanity, half of hunger and
the rest of human dignity in settling international disputes.—Yours, etc., WEST WIND. June 23, 1966.
