Partisanship

Sir,—The Lions scored and there was a begrudged murmur of approval. The Universities scored and the stands rocked with the acclamation of a jubilant mass! I can draw one of two conclusions: either the Universities deserved the greater appreciation, or the New Zealand Rugby audiences lack sporting instinct. It is not (I think) unnatural for one to hope for the home side to win. However, this is no excuse for the biased, ungracious, and completely unsporting attitude displayed by the public at today’s game, an attitude which seems to typify our sporting audiences. The Lions have been accused of being unsociable. If they are, can we, as the “kettle,” blame them?—Yours, etc., C. H. NOTLEY. June 22, 1966.
