Aphis, Virus Report
Flights of cereal aphides have now ceased in the Blenheim-Seddon area and at Fernside, Annat and Milford, where they have not been trapped for the last two weeks, says the eighth report of the aphis and virus warning service. For the week ending June 17 winged cereal aphides were found on traps at Waikari (one), Balcairn (four), and Bortons (one). The latter site is in North Otago. There were no aphides present on traps at the other 10 sites Blenheim, Seddon, Fernside, Annat, Lincoln, Southbridge, Barrhill, Eiffelton, Milford and Morven. “It is almost certain that wheat emerging before June 10 will have a reasonable chance of aphis infestation,” says the service. “The committee offers a firm recommendation that these crops be inspected and where any aphides are found that spraying be considered as soon as flights have ceased. In areas where flights are continuing all emerging crops should be inspected.”
