RECORD CANNOT BE MATCHED
When Graham Hill flashed across the finish line and won the 1966 Indianapolis 500 in his Lola Ford on Firestone tyres at an average speed of 144.317 m.p.h., it was the forty-third consecutive time Firestone tyres have won this race. This continuous string of Firestone victories started in 1920, and by winning also in 1909 and 1911, Firestone tyres have won a total of 45 times in 50 races. This record cannot be matched by any other tyre in any race in the world.
This year’s race was truely international. Four top race drivers, all on Firestone tyres, were from outside the United States, and the two who finished in first and second places, Graham HUI from England and Jim Clark from Scotland, are former International Grand Prix race champions. Jackie Stewart, from Scotland, winner of this year’s Grand Prix race at Monaco, was leading the race until mechanical trouble forced him to retire only 20 miles from victory. Jim McElreath, on Firestone tyres, won third place and Stewart was awarded sixth. So, Firestone tyres won the first three positions and four of the first six.
This success is even more significant when it is remembered that of the 33 starters in the race, 17 cars were equipped with Firestone tyres and 18 with another make of tyre.
What a wonderful record Firestone tyres have established at Indianapolis and are currently establishing by winning major races around the world 7 There is no greater proof of safetly and dependability. —Advt.
