Farmer’s Girl Works Well At Wingatui
"Th* Prese" Special Service DUNEDIN. Farmer's Girl and Startler earned starts at the Ashburton meeting when they worked exceptionally well at Wingatul yesterday. Farmer’s Girl (E. J. Didham) showed a touch of the class which won her a division of the McLean Stakes in the spring
when she galloped over half a mile on the plough together with her stable-mate. Royal Burgh (R. A. Low), in 51 2-ssec, the opening furlong In 12 2-ssec. Royal Burgh, winner of the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton last season, has raced well below that form, but has worked well. He accompanied his stablemate, Sir Athol (G. Mee) In a fast clean school over four flights of hurdles. Calvados, ridden by his race rider, S. B. Robertson, worked well over half a mile on a heavy track in 53 2-ssec, the first furlong In 13sec. Calvados’ performance for fourth In the Provincial Handicap on the last day of the Dunedin meeting was a strong pointer to his return to form, and he Is not without a chance in the Maronan Mlle at Ashburton tomorrow.
Startler <G. Mee) decided his trainer, J. S. McKay on a start in the Dromore Steeplechase in preference to the Hinds Hurdles at Ashburton when he schooled brilliantly over a round of country with his more experienced stable-mate, Linred (P. McKay).
