Bullets For Stolen Guns (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 23. Auckland sporting goods shops would show care in selling ammunition to fit weapons stolen from the Ponsonby drill hall, managers said today. They have received no direct request from the police investigating the theft of six sub-machine-guns, three selfloading rifles and seven automatic pistols. However, anyone who tried to buy ammunition to fit the weapons would be required to give a name and address and proof of iden. tity. Shops handling the 9 mm. rimless ammunition which will fit the sub-machine-guns have told staff to “have a good look” at anyone requesting it. The general belief is that the thieves have got the ammunition over a period in small lots—or will try to obtain it from shops in the South Island. One Auckland shop is making sure that no 9 mm. ammunition remains on display or on shelves at night in case thieves break in. The police believe the weapons were stolen for criminal use.
