Uneconomic Prices For Apples, Pears
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 23. Market prices for New Zealand apples and pears on the British and Continental markets continued to be uneconomic, the chairman of the Apple and Pear Board, (Mr K. B. Longmore) said in London yesterday, according to a news release from the board in Wellington.
‘‘Up to the middle of last week, the results reveal that revenue is £175,000 behind last year, to the same date, for about the same quantity. In addition the board has to recover from the market £l3O,000 to cover the extra packing costs incurred on an additional 500,000 tray-pack containers shipped this year,” said Mr Longmore. “As far as quantities are concerned, South Africa has shipped an additional 1,000,000 cases of apples and 500,000 cases of pears to the British market, while Australia is estimated to be down by 800,000 cases of apples, but up by 270.000 cases of pears. “New Zealand quantities to date are much the same as last year, but heavy cargoes are now being discharged and are still to arrive. “A five-week heat wave on
the Continent has had a dis1 astrous effect on fruit prices there, resulting in the enforced diversion of shipments destined for these markets.”
