TWO SEEDS GONE, MORE IN DANGER

(N.Z-P.A. Reuter—Copyright)

LONDON.

More seeded players will be under pressure when the men’s singles is reduced to the last 16 in the Wimbledon tennis championships today.

Two seeds—F. S. Stolle (Australia) and C. E. Graebner (United States)—- were eliminated in the second round yesterday.

The seeded players with the toughest matches today are the Australians, R. Emerson, the defending champion, and J. Newcombe, and the Spaniard, M. Santana.

Emerson clashes with talented Puerto Rican player. C. Pasareli, the United States indoor champion who twice beat Emerson on grass in America last year. Pasareli won the United States intercollegiate title in Florida last Saturday.

GOOD RECORD Newcombe, seeded fifth, meets K. N. Fletcher, the Australian now based in Hong Kong, who has a good record at Wimbledon. Santana, who holds the United States singles title, and is seeded fourth, plays M. Riessen (United States), who reached the last 16 at Wimbledon a year ago. The second-seeded A. D. Roche will meet the 20-year-old Englishman, P. Curtis, the sixth-seeded R. D. Ralston (United States) will play a South African, K. Diepraam, and C. Drysdale (South

Africa) will play J. Packens (United States). The first dents in the men’s seedings were made yesterday by two Australians, R. A. Hewitt and O. Davidson. Hewitt beat his doubles partner, Stolle, 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, and Davidson defeated Graebner, 63, 3-6, 8-6, 6-1. Stolle was only a shadow of the man who had reached the men’s singles final in the last three years. Hewitt, once labelled the “bad boy of Australian tennis” because of a fiery temperament, played a cool, calculated, power game. But his match-winning shot was his return of service, low to Stolle’s feet

Graebner, a bespectacled six-footer from Ohio, failed to reproduce the sparkling form he showed on his winter tour of Australia. Emerson moved smoothly into the last 32 with a crushing 6-2, 63, 6-1 win over W. Bungert (West Germany), who beat him at Wimbledon in 1963. Ralston is still having trouble with his big service and yesterday conceded a set to A. Metreveli, a 21-year-old Russian student journalist. Results:— MEN’S SINGLES Second Round
