SEARCH FOR PRISONER
Escape From Police Van
A man who last week began serving 18 months’ imprisonment for burglary escaped from police custody about 5.30 p.m. yesterday while being taken from the Christchurch Central Police Station to Addington Prison. He is Alexander Currie Wingate, aged 21. Wingate escaped from the back of a police van which was taking him and 11 other prisoners back to Addington after their appearance in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. It is believed that Wingate managed to open the van door and jump out while the van was stationary at traffic lights. No attempt was made by the other prisoners to follow him.
Wingate is described as being sft lljin, of medium build, with a fresh complexion and dark hair. He is Scottish. He was wearing a dark suit.
Late last night 20 policemen and two police dogs and their handlers were still patrolling areas of the city between the police station and Addington.
