Freeing Trade

Sir,—People will be amazed that prominent among those who are protesting at the hold-up against the freeing of world trade, the name of Mr Marshall appears. Can he be the same Mr Marshall who has started all sorts of industries, including the notorious bicycle factory, at complete variance with our obligations under G.A.T.T.? This in spite of the fact that National Party policy is to abolish import controls. A prominent British visitor, Mr G. Wilcox, is reiterating that the very best weapons our trade negotiators . can have is an increasing demand for British goods to be paid for by even bigger earnings in our best market, Britain. Obviously we could hardly have sent a worse negotiator and if he returns emptyhanded we can blame ourselves. —Yours, etc., V. WILKINSON. June,2l, 1966.
