“Saint Joan”
Sir, —To hear and see Shaw's “Saint Joan” is an experience no-one can afford to miss, especially teen-agers. Joan died a teen-ager, and it is a pity her vaunted modern counterparts cannot produce an actress to portray her. I saw Da-.c Sybil Thorndyke in the part. She had, ot course, superb elocution and dramatic power, but to me, at any rate, she was not Saint Joan. “1 could not kill the Maid.” says Shaw’s Executioner, meaning her influence will live on. De Gaulle adopted the Cross of Lorraine (Joan's province) as the symbol under which he sought to restore France. Liberating Europe from the United States is perhaps going a bit too far. The Repertory Theatre production should be a “must” for everyone, an inspiring change from adver-tisement-ridden television.— Yours, etc., A. B. CEDARIAN. June 23, 1966.
