“The Press” In 1866
June 25 FORSAKEN WOODSTOCK.—The once thriving little community of Woodstock has sadly dwindled away lately, and the diggings present a melancholy deserted appearance, contracting strongly with the bustle and animation which prevailed a few months back. The township, which was then the haunt of jovial t diggers, who thronged the different | stores and hotels, now looks dilapidated I and foresaken, and a dreamy stillness I reigns over the place. Through the ■ removal of buildings here and there, R gaps have been formed in the street
which looks as if the town had divided against itself, and forever cut the world and all its belongings. We once entertained hopes that Woodstock would prove a thriving permanent diggings, and that the run of deep ground which exists under the terrace would be found auriferous, and traced upwards for miles ... We are grieved that such barren results should have been the fruits of the great amount of labor and capital expended, and the energy and pluck displayed in developing this portion of the Kanieri district, but persist in hoping still thgt better days will yet dawn upon it . . .
