RESEARCH IN DIABETES
Fellowship To Be Set ,Up A Diabetic Research Fellowship will be established in New Zealand by the Diabetic Association of New Zealand. Applications will be called for from Britain, Australia, the United States and New Zealand, and will close on October 31.
Mr E. Blain, president of ■ the Christchurch Diabetic Society, said at a meeting of, the society this week that the ; decision to proceed with the fellowship was made at a re-I cent meeting of the associa-’ tion in Wellington, and £4500 of the £lO,OOO needed was now in hand. Mr Blain said the selection committee had already been appointed. It would consist of the National Medical Advisory Panel and Sir Charles Bums, Sir Edward Sayers,, Dr. W. E. Henley and Mr J. Reid. It was hoped to assist the research fund target by holding a national raffle this year. The association was confident that the lottery funds grants committee would favourably reconsider its application for assistance onee an appointment had been made and a specific research programme defined. “With major national plans such as these now under way every effort needs to be made to increase membership to ensure a strong represent* I tion throughout New Zea-; land,” Mr Blain said. “It is most encouraging therefore to learn that plans are now in hand to form new district societies in Palmerston North, Gisborne and Greymouth. “If this fellowship is to be established and maintained we need the help and interest of every diabetic in the country . Wfcat greater challenge I and opportunity could we have for diabetics to helpthemselves and the diabetics of tomorrow ” he said.
