FIVE MEDALS PRESENTED
Psychopedic Nursing
Mrs M. C. Basely, matron of Sunnyside Hospital, yesterday presented, five medals to nurses at Templeton Hospital who had qualified in the psychopedic nursing examinations held by the Nurses’ and Midwives’ Board. Mrs Bazely is a member of the board. Those who received medals were Misses A. J. Grenfell and 3. 3. M. De Swart, and Messrs 3. G. Chambers, J. C. Cole and D. R. Dixon. The ceremony was attended by Dr. 3. C. Marshall, medical superintendent of Templeton Hospital, and. Miss F. M. E. Fox, the hospital’s matron. Dr. Marshall emphasised the need for specialisation in nursing. He said the word “psychopedic” was one which had been coined in New Zealand to describe the nursing of mentally defective children.
That specialty had created considerable interest in recent years because of the fact that the late President Kennedy had a mentally defective sister. This had given a spur to research into the condition in the United States, which had been reflected throughout the world. Dr. Marshall said the medals were an incentive to trainees and helped give them a sense of achievement.
