NEW BISHOP OF CHCH

Consecration In August

The Very Rev. W. A. Pyatt, Dean of Christchurch, and Bisbop-elect will be consecrated on St Bartholomew’s Day, Wednesday, August 24. This was announced by the Primate and Archbishop of New Zealand (the Most Rev. N. A. Lesser) in Napier yesterday. The consecration service will be in the Cathedral in the morning and the enthronement of the new Bishop will take place in the evening. ' The present Bishop (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren) retires today, and the administration of the diocese until the enthronement ■ will be carried out by the Archbishop’s Commissary, the Ven. H. M. Cocks, Archdeacon of Christchurch.

Archdeacon Cocks has formerly acted as Vicar-General but this is an appointment made by the Bishop. A Commissary is appointed by the Primate who is technically in charge of a diocese when there is no Bishop. The Diocesan Registrar (Mr J. C. Cottrell) said that arrangements for the consecration were made by the Primate and would be the subject of a later announce-

ment. He said most of the bishops in the Province of New Zealand would be likely to attend the consecration.
