SEWAGE PLANT Conference Asked To Enter Dispute
(New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, June 22. The Dairy Workers’ Union, which has played a leading role in agitation against the proposed siting of Hamilton’s sewage treatment works, today reported the controversy to the Dominion dairy conference.
In a telegram to the chairman of the Dairy Board (Sir Andrew Linton) the union “urges the Dominion dairy conference now meeting in Wellington to demand that New Zealand’s present and potential market for dairy produce in Asia is protected by calling on the Government to end this dangerous situation
in Hamilton, which local brain power has failed to solve.”
The telegram was sent by the union’s national secretary, Mr S. Wheatley. “The basis for our action has been our concern at the effect of the siting of the sewage works on New Zealand’s overseas image,” he said today. “The recent remarks of the chairman of the New Zealand Dairy Company (Mr F. L. Onion) has fortified and strenghtened us in our stand.” 1
