Wimbledon Champion Makes Nervous Start
(N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. The defending champion, Miss M. Smith (Australia), and the Brazilian, Miss M. E. Bueno, won their opening matches when the Wimbledon women’s singles championship began yesterday.
But whereas Miss Smith showed nervous and erratic form, Miss Bueno displayed much of the artistry which won her the Wimbledon title in 1959, 1960 and 1964. Miss Smith, acclaimed the world’s number one woman player of 1965 after winning 18 tournaments, including Wimbledon, beat Miss E. Starkie, the British international, 8-6, 6-2. The tall, 23-year-old Australian served three nervous double faults in the opening game, trailed 03, and made several unforced errors. American Powerless
It was not until Miss Smith had narrowly won the first set that she settled down to her natural flowing power game. In sharp contrast, Miss Bueno swept through against the 20-year-old American, Miss S. de Fina, 6-1, 6-2, in 25 minutes. Miss de Fina, a little brunette from Hollywood, was powerless to stem the flow of majestic winners from Miss Bueno, who showed no trace of her serious knee operation last December. Mrs B. J. King, who heads the American challenge, and is seeded four, entered the second round after a stern tussle with Britain’s under-21 champion, Miss W. Shaw. Tenacious Scot Mrs King, a finalist in 1963, won 6-2, 8-6, her tenacious Scottish opponent making her fight for the second set after building up a useful 3-0 lead. However, the American’s greater experience was a telling factor. The third-seeded Mrs A. Jones, British winner of the recent Italian and French championships, swiftly dispatched the Italian, Miss L. Pericoli, 6-1, 6-2. On a day of grey skies and showers, the women had to share the day’s programme with the men. The Australian, A. D. Roche, who had been permitted to start a nay later than the other seeded men players because of an Injured
leg, was limping a little, when he beat E. A. Beards (England), 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 in an hour.
Roche, the Italian and French champion, did not have to do much running, but it is , doubtful whether he would' have lasted against a player of higher calibre than Beards, who served 16 double faults. Impressive Win An impressive win was achieved by the South African, T. Ryan, who eliminated the experienced Italian, N. Pietrangeli, 6-2, 6-8, 3-6, 6-3, 6- This avenged -his defeat by Pietrangeli in the same round a year ago. L. A. Gerrard, of New Zealand, lost his first round match against the American, E. L. Scott, which had been interrupted by failing light the previous day with Scott leading 9-7, 6-6. Scott clinched the second set, 13-11, and took the third, 7Results: MEN'S SINGLES First Round T. W.
