START, STOP, START

There was a faulty start to the match when Williment kicked off while the National Anthem was being played, but the referee hastily stopped the game. Two quick penalties to the Lions and a lovely curving run by Bresnihan put the Lions on attack. Darting runs by Jones, some rugged driving by the Lions pack with Pask, Norris and Mcßride prominent, boded ill for the Universities.

Play swirled around for 10 minutes as the Lions and the Universities sparred away at| each other and it seemed that i the Lions were not quite con-1 fident enough to unleash their attacking backs. Then, a 60-yard passing movement between Hinshelwood and Watkins took the Lions close to scoring and from a line-out ruck Pask crashed through the middle of the ruck to score. Rutherford converted, but still the Lions were not playing with much purpose and there were some bored murmurings from the crowd. This changed quickly to

applause when Montgomery scored. Kember doubled around outside Davies and thrust through for 25 yards before passing to Montgomery whb dived for the line just ahead of Hinshelwood’s tackle. i This brought the light of battle to the Universities eyes. The -forwards asserted themselves in driving rushes, {Laidlaw directed his backs capably and intelligently, {and it was a thankful Lions 'team that heard the halLtime {whistle. j A dropped goal by Watkins {after two minutes of Hie seclond half and some strong {driving by a now rejuvenated Lions pack sent the Universities on to desperate defence. Three minutes later Watkins dropped his second 'goal, and an 11-3 lead sparked the Lions into some brilliant Rugby. -I Pask and Mcßride led the forwards with telling effect { and in the space of seven' {minutes the score raced to 24-3. Jones, Watkins and, {Bresnihan were bemusing the, i defence with their great ac- 1

celeration and quick flick passing, and it seemed that now the Lions would open the floodgates of their scoring potential. But, surprisingly, they relaxed their grip on the game. The forwards became a trifle loose, the backs lost their rhythm and combination, and, as it were, decided to go solo. After 25 minutes Kember scored for Universities when he side-stepped through a sketchy defence and Williment’s conversion made the score 24-8. Play bubbled all over the field as both teams started passing rushes from all parts of the field. The Universities forwards faithfully followed some astute kicks by .{Laidlaw and Kember and the Lions suddenly looked an ordinary i team* I Fifteen minutes of good 'play by The Universities was {rewarded by O’Shannessey’s i try and the game finished as ,the schoolchildren appeared lon the field from all direc'tions.
