SCRAPPY GAME
Country XV Beaten Canterbury Country produced a rather inept display against Marlborough in the curtain-raiser at Lancaster Park yesterday and was fortunate that its losing margin, 14-16, was not greater. Play was extremely scrappy at times, although there was plenty of enthusiasm, and only on rare occasions did either side show real combination. Marlborough scored four tries to Country’s one. Only the sound kicking of the country full-back, I. Doody, prevented the margin being wider.
Marlborough's points came from tries by A. Sutherland (two) and K. Marfell (two), and two conversions by K. Patchett. M. Boyce scored Country’s only try. Doody converted it and kicked three goals from penalties. Few members of Country team’s forwards enhanced their reputations. A. Wyllie made several driving runs and A. Hopkinson worked hard in the tight but they lacked the drive they are capable of.
R. Sutherland jumped well in the line-outs for -Marlborough and A. Sutherland, the No. 8, was v«y quick round the scrum. He was rewarded with two tries. Marfell was one of the few backs on the field to show any real determined running. The first of his two tries was a splendid one. coming after he had beaten three men and gone over the line in a tackle. M. Boyce did all that was expected of him at halfback for Country.
