Table Tennis Hung In Balance

The fate of the Canterbury senior table tennis inter-club [competition hung in the balance last evening while the two leading teams, Selwyn and [Eagles, fought out a tense struggle. I Selwyn needed to win the final doubles to win on games and did so—but not until a three-game marathon. J. Armstrong was fully extended to win all his three singles and only by considerable luck managed to defeat H. P. Holt in three games. | Holt and N. V. Brightwell played well for Selwyn but Mrs T. May lost all three singles, including her match with Mrs M. J. Shadbolt. Even without the services of Chin Sin Pin, Avonside proved far too strong for Wallabies Green. However,: the winning margin of 9-3 was a little flattering to Avonside; as six of the matches went to the advantage game. Linwood again failed to win I but this time it went down by the margin of one game to; Celtic. It won the final [ doubles to even the matches at six-all, but conceded a' game in doing so and thus lost the contest.

Wallabies Red again lost to University, and so gave University only its second win in eight contests. Wallabies led 5-3 but lost the last fotfr matches.

I It was a fine display by University to recover from an , I apparently hopeless position ' ■ against a vastly more experi- ’ enced team. C. W. C. Tilby ■ won all his singles but it was > the defat of R. J. Scott by T. j Rutledge, in a marathon > match, which decided the ' issue. , Points, alter eight rounds, 'are:—Selwyn 13, Eagles 10, 8 Avonside 10.
