Ribbon Development Worries A.A.
The roads, patrols and services’ committee was asked last evening by the council of the Automobile Association (Canterbury) to bring down a report on ribbon development on State highways.
A letter had been received by the committee from the Transport Department saying that a 38-chain section of State highway one on either side of the Barters roadMarsh’s road intersection, at present a limited speed zone, now qualified for gazetting as a 30 m.p.h. area. The association's views were requested. “With some reservations,” and regretting that ribbon development along State highways created the need for
-such restrictions, the committee recommended that the I department be told thaf it the 'section of road met the formula requirements, the association would support the 30 m.p.h. restriction. I He thought everyone viewed the ribbon develop.rnent with alarm, said Mr E. R. Casbolt. It was not a new problem. Free movement of traffic was impeded and the necessary extension of services placed a burden on ratepayers. The only way to stop it was to declare roads limited access roads, said Mr T. D. Craig. Ultimately it would be 30 m.p.h. from Christchurch to Rolleston unless the local bodies could be made to do something about it. Of course motorways would be the answer, said Mr J. R. Maling, “but we will have to wait for it”
