Midwinter

Sir, —To those of us whose voices cry in the wilderness that June 22 is the winter solstice, the letter today is most welcome. It will be a long time before the precession of the equinoxes effects much change. In my reckoning, however, 8.33 p.m. on June 21 (G.M.T.) is 8.3 a.m., June 22, New Zealand Standard Time (at 172} degrees E. meridian) and 8.33 a.m. in Sidey’s Civil Time, time for the scientists in Antarctica to make a festal day of it In lovely weather, we hope, like ours.—Yours, etc, B.E.S. June 22, 1966.
