RED CROSS BUILDING
Room Given To Expand The North Canterbury branch of the Red Cross has entered into a contract to purchase a two-storey house at 20 Cashel street, almost opposite the present headquarters. The building is on 29 perches. The chairman (Mr E. W. Reeves) said yesterday that when the building was taken over in about three months, it would provide for expansion.
The present headquarters were to have been expanded for more office space but it was found more economic to buy-the house. Mr Reeves said the ground floor would be converted into offices for one department and the top storey would be made into a flat Permits would have to be granted before any alterations could be done. Mr Reeves said the property had entrances on both Cashel street and Cambridge terrace and there was ample provision for parking. Money for the building came from an expansion fund which had accumulated from bequests. No street appeal donations would be used.
The house was sold by private treaty by Ford and Hadfield, Ltd. The property was passed in at £11.250 when offered by auction recently.
