General News
Something Doing Christchurch streets were thinly populated yesterday afternoon, and there was an abundance of parking spaces in even the busiest areas. But if a stranger’s eyes had not told him there was “something doing,” his ears soon would. The football commentary blared from cars and shops, and many of the few walkers on the streets had transistor radios. In one bank, a teller sat, withdrawn, at her counter, a white ear-piece and cord explaining all. “All My Savings’’ “All my savings,” was the only message in a childish hand on a envelope received recently by C.0.R.5.0. Inside was £1 13s, said the district organiser (Mr G. H. Coley) yesterday.
Islands’ Air Mail The regular air-mail service from New Zealand to the Cook Islands had had to be discontinued because of the suspension of the air service from Western Samoa to the Cook Islands, the Chief Postmaster in Christchurch (Mr M. E. Wilson) said yesterday. The last flight carried mail sent from Auckland on June 22, and future mail would go by sea.
