Farewell To Headmaster Mr G. Macdonald, who has been appointed headmaster of the Islewortii School, sifter be ing head at St Albans for more than 10 years, was bidden farewell by the parentteacher association and school committee at St. Albans and received presentations. Mr Macdonald, who completed bachelor of arts and diploma of education qualifications in Canterbury, was formerly head at Timaru West and at Sumner.
During his time at St. Albans the school hall (one of the first for a contributing school) was erected, equipment was built up to make the school one of the best supplied in the South Island, a filtration plant was installed in the swimming baths, and further building improvement is now in progress. The school will celebrate its centennial in 1973. It once had a very large roll but, with the transfer of senior pupils to Intermediate schools and the dwindling of young families in the inner city area, numbers have now dropped to 444. The school Is one of three in Christchurch built on a distinctive Canterbury plan of scattered blocks of open-air classrooms. At the farewell function, tributes were paid by Mr S. Grade, chairman of the school committee, and Mr B. Anderson, president of the P.T.A. Pupils presented choral and instrumental items and folk dancing.
