No Licence Yet For Dance Hall In Lyttelton

Before a public-building licence could be issued for a proposed coffee bar and dance hall at the comer of London and Canterbury streets some work would have to be done, said the inspector for the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board (Mr B. J. Taylor), in a report to the Lyttelton Borough Council on Monday evening. A rear exit into Canterbury street would have to be provided, among other things. Mr Taylor said the floor area would allow the accommodation of 100 persons, which was the number applied for. Mr Taylor said that safeguards against fire and means of escape in case of fire were satisfactory in all public buildings except the Harbour Light Theatre, the Methodist Church Hall, and the Seamen’s Mission Hall. He had been unable to inspect the latter because it was locked. The building inspector (Mr F. Davidson) recommended that licences be reissued for all public buildings except

the Methodist Church Hall and the Harbour Light Theatre, which was not open for inspection. The health inspector (Mr J. L. O’Callaghan) recommended the issue of a licence for the Excelsior Hall subject to the ticket office being removed from the staircase.

Concern at the number of children in the borough riding bicycles without either front or rear lights was expressed by Traffic Officer D. W. Simpson. Traffic Officer Simpson added that he felt trucks using the port were being overloaded, but it was difficult to find a level area between the wharves and the tunnel portal where weighing could be carried out. He would, however, continue to watch for overloaded trucks and take them to an area where they could be weighed. Dilapidated House.—The council agreed to refer to the town-planning committee a report from the borough health inspector (Mr J. L. O’Callaghan) on a tenanted dwelling-house at 31a Winchester street, owned by the Lyttelton Free Kindergarten Association. The association wants a closing order issued and the tenant evicted. Mr O’Callaghan said the house was very old and had not been maintained in good repair. Permits Issued.—Nine drainage and plumbing permits were issued in May for a total value of £438. One permit was for sewer work at Diamond Harbour. Donation. —The council agreed to give £5 5s to the Lyttelton Free Kindergarten Association.
