BRIGHTON MALL
Road Closing Suggested The closing of Seaview road to vehicular traffic for five hours on a Saturday was proposed at a meeting of the board of the Christchurch Civic Trust on Monday evening as an experimental step towards suggested pedestrian mall for New Brighton. The board decided to make a survey in the area and acquaint shopkeepers with the advantages of closing the street Mr P. J. Beaven said he had inspected the shopping area with the New Brighton Pier and Foreshore Committee. He was sure Seaview road would make an almost perfect pedestrian shopping mall. Very little would need to be changed. Mr F. M. Warren said he considered Seaview road too wide for a mall unless a lot of work was done in the centre. If the cars were taken away there would be just a big empty space.
When Mr R. H. Hammond said the trust could be accused of promoting a sectional Interest in advocating a mall for New Brighton, Mr L G. B. Wilson disagreed. The whole of the city was Involved in the New Brighton shopping centre, he said. It was a full community effort. On Mr Beaven’s suggestion the board decided to write to the Wellington City Council asking for a report on the closing of Cuba street and the response of shopkeepers. Mr Beaven suggested that a suitable time to close Seaview road to traffic would be between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on a Saturday.
