Canterbury Graduates
The degree of doctor of philosophy has been conferred by Harvard University on a graduate of the University of Canterbury, Mr I. Francis. Mr Francis is the son of the Very Rev. S. C. Francis, formerly of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Christchurch, and now in Invercargill, and the late Mrs Francis. He was educated at Christchurch East school and St. Andrew's College, where he was a prefect and a member of the first XI. He obtained his B.Sc at the University of Canterbury in 1959 and the following year graduated with a master’s degree with honours in mathematics.
Mr Francis went to Harvard on a Frank Knox Memorial Fellowship, and studied there for his Ph.D in the field of statistics. For several years he was the Harvard Glee Club’s tenor soloist, and travelled with the club on a tour of South-east Asia. Californian Degree
Another University of Canterbury graduate has been awarded a Ph.D. by the California Institute of Technology.
lie is Mr V. Kerdemelidis, who came to Christchurch with his parents, Mr and Mrs C. Kerdemelidis, from Greece in 1951. He was educated at Christchurch Technical College, and studied electrical engineering at the University of Canterbury, obtaining a B.E. with first class honours in 1957. After two years’ research work with the New Zealand Tost Office Mr Kerdemelidis was awarded a scholarship to study electronics at the California Institute of Technology, where he graduated with a master of science degree in 1961.
