MONEY FOR MILK
Use To Assist Hungry Urged (N.Z. Press Association* NELSON, June 21. The Nelson Education Board last night approved a i emit asking the Government to consider abolishing the school-milk system and using the savings to send milk products to under-developed countries. Mr T. H. Ladley, proposing the remit for the Education Boards’ Association’s conference, said there was no need for milk to be supplied to schools in this country. The scheme must cause considerable cost and “terrific waste” throughout the country, he said. Savings effected by discontinuing the scheme could be used to help relieve famine in South-east Asia. “If we don’t feed the children in the Near East, then the Communists will.” Mr H. W. Chisnail said that at Waimea College, a school with 1000 to 1100 pupils, only 96 bottles of milk were taken daily. However, some of the primary schools “did very well” since chilled milk had been supplied.
