SKATING TRIALS

Fast Times Recorded The two Christchurch members of the national roller skating training squad, G. M. Oliver and Miss R. Alexander, enhanced their chances of winning selection for the world speed championships In Madrid in October when they competed in special trials arranged by the Christchurch Amateur Roller Skating Club and the management of the Riccarton Shopping Mall on Saturday. Skating over 3000 metres. Miss Alexander, the national threemile record holder, recorded 7min 21.15 e time which compared favourable with the 7mtn 17sec achieved by the 1965 world champion, Anna Lambetchs (Belgium) . Glover had a great battle over 5000 metres with his fellow club skater, P. Bastion, and won by only 2sec. Glover’s time of 11 min 18.3 sec was outstanding, for Guther Tauber (Germany) won last year's world title in llmin 46.65ec. while comparison of times is often misleading, the general standard indicates that New Zealand will be well represented this year. Bastion’s 5000 metres effort won a quick reward —immediately after the trials he was invited by Mr I. Hughes, a national selector, to join the squad for the final trials at Levin next week-end.
