HARD FORWARD STRUGGLE
LINWOOD 14: A. G. Mansfield and W. F. McCormick, tries; McCormick, conversion and two penalty goals. SHIRLEY »: R. A. Hicks scored a try and B. Richards two penalty goals. In a tough, bruising forward struggle, Linwood, the cochamplonshlp leader, managed to hold off a determined second half effort by Shirley. The game was mainly confined to two strong and experienced packs, which gave and asked for no quarter. Little back play was seen as the loose forwards of both sides disrupted the back-lines, forcing them Into errors and much hasty kicking. Linwood had a lot to thank McCormick for. As well as scoring 11 of hfs team’s points he gave a good all-round performance. A feature of his play was his calmness under pressure and long raking line kicks with either foot. Linwood obtained the vital break-through In the first minutes of the second spell. Two elementary errors by Shirley p’.avers let the quick thinking Linwood flanker, Mansfield, pounce on a loose ball. Shirley went back on to the attabk. and stayed in Linwood territory for a greater part of the haft Its forwards played with Are and determination, and only some desperate defensive play by Linwood kept them out. B. Veal played an outstanding game for Shirley in the
tight, and R. Grenfell Jumped high tn the Hne-outs and gave a sound all-round performance. Referee: Mr J. M. Woods.
