CHANCES MISSED

Backs Were Neglected UNIVERSITY A U: J. Ktrkby. a try; D. C. Leary, a conversion and two penalty goals. ALBION 4: A. C. Harrison, try and a penalty goal. At Lancaster Park Oval, the game was interesting more because of opportunities not taken rather than because of any outstanding play by either side. With a wealth of possession the University A backs were unable to score, and three kicks at goal from handy positions were missed by the unpredictable Albion full-back, Harrison.

The line-out play of University A was remarkably efficient and successful. The ball was tapped by G. Garlick to M. Brown and cleared tn less time than It takes to tell. Had its passage to the three-quarters been equally as rapid University A would surely have scored heavily. But the five-eighths chose te kick, run or delay their passing to the extent that players of the class of P. Carter and R Vivian were given no room to move.

University’s try came from a break by the flanker, D. Wilson, who had a fine game. Almost, it seemed, in desperation he ran from the back of the line out, and It was only fitting that another forward should score. L. O’Reilly and Kirkby also stood out in a well-drilled pack, and Its 70-yard passing movement in the second spell richly deserved a try.

The Albion backs made good use of what little of the ball they saw and, oddly enough, their wing three-quarters had more opportunity than those of University A J Adams was a capable first five-eighths, and J Newlove showed speed on the wing. Harrison had a rather unhappy day, his line kicking falling mostly Into the safe hands of Leary, who, In his accomplished manner, returned the ball with Interest. K. Baker, L. Scott, and R. Rowlatt were the best of a pack which was overshadowed on the day by the faster and stronger University A forwards. Referee: Mr C. J. Taylor.
