TRYING NEW GEOMETRY

Advantages Outlined

Under a pilot scheme, transformation geometry, a new branch in mathematics, is being taught to selected classes at School Certificate level in three New Zealand post-primary schools this year.

The fundamental importance of transformation geometry in the theory of groups was explained to the mathematics and physics section of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand by Mr A. R. D. Ramsay, a teacher at Christ’s College Mr Ramsay said research was still being done on the branch. It caused a revolution in mathematical thinking when a paper on the subject was presented in 1963. Until then, Euclid’s theories, written more than 2000 years ago, had been the basis of geometry teachings.
