Welfare Council For Sunnyside

A welfare council has been formed to work with Sunnyside Hospital, and the council’s first meeting since its formation will be held on Monday. The council’s chairman is Mr I. HatrickSmith.

A meeting convened by Mr Hatrick-Smith was held at the hospital last month to consider the formation of the welfare council.

Representatives of the Christchurch West Lions Club visited the welfare council of the Templeton Hospital, and later decided to call together representatives of organisations already helping Sunnyside Hospital to try to establish a similar council there.

The objectives of the council would be to co-ordinate work already being done, and to channel the needs to appropriate organisations. to the ultimate benefit of the patients. The meeting was told how the Templeton council operated; that it met bi-monthly and had a council of 20. All activities had the approval of the medical superintendent, and past activities had included the promotion of entertainment groups, outings for patients, providing equipment the development of an adoption trust board, the establishment of a voluntary work system in the hospital, and the building of a chapel. The meeting resolved to form such a council for Sunnyside. Membership would

be on the basis of an elected member from voluntary organisations wishing to act on the council. Matters discussed at the next meeting will include the needs of the hospital—a library service, and a short constitution for the council.
