Trouble With Halswell Water Pumping Gear

Extreme dissatisfaction at i the repeated failures of electronic equipment installed at its Junction road pump ; house, was expressed by the ' Halswell County Council on Thursday evening. In a written report, the , county engineer (Mr M. J. , Clark) said that ever since their installation, the relays in the pump switching circuit had been faulty. Either the pumps were not switched on when the water level in the reservoir was low, o- there was flooding because the switches did not work when the reservoir was full. Water which overflowed had caused scouring in Kennedy’s Bush road.

The suppliers of the equipment had said that their relays were not at fault, but all evidence pointed in this direction, said the report. The council decided to tell the consulting engineer of its extreme dissatifaction with the equipment, send the report and ask for remedial action. Rates Struck.—ln accordance with a resolution passed previously, the chairman (Mr J. Y. Pethig) moved that a general rate of fifteensixteenths pence in the £ be struck. The drainage rate is ,06d in the £, and there is a charge of £1 5s on each property for rubbish collection. Rates are due on August

Grant Made.—The council will make three annual contributions of £lO towards the 1968 Pan-Pacific Arts Festival.

Building Permits.—Eighteen building permits to a value of £31,419 were issued during the month, the council was told. The largest permit, of £B5OO was for a dwelling on the Old Tai Tapu road. Amalgamation.—The council

(decided to write to the Heathcote County Council saying it was willing'to invite the Local Government Commission to investigate county amalgamation in the area. Asking for the investigation would not commit the council in any way, said the chairman.
