GOOD JUMPING AT AWAPUNI

“The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. The best hurdle horses . In commission here will clash at Awapuni on Saturday in the Awapuni Hurdles, probably the most exciting race to be run on the second day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s winter meeting. This Is the first time that an open hurdle race has been run at a Manawatu winter meeting since the L. P. Collinson Hurdles was aband-

oned in 1963. Count Lin won that contest from a sevenhorse field. The year before, Splice beat seven rivals, while in 1961 Colchis had only six opponents to beat. Change Of Plans

In an effort to salvage jumping in this district the Manawatu Racing Club has replaced the Jumpers’ Flat Handicap, staged in the last two seasons, with a £lOOO Hurdles event which drew a field of 10. Indications are that it will be a good spectacle and betting could cover quite a wide range with either Grand Coeur or Conspirator the favourite. J. Hely has been retained for Grand Coeur, which has won at each of his two attempts in hack hurdles class. These wins came at Trentham straight after impressive flat form on the Nelson circuit. Because Grand Coeur has only 9-9 he may make matters difficult for his moreexperienced rivals. Amber Wine’s appearance in the Manawatu Steeplechase promises to be one of the high-lights of the meeting. The Hastings jumper, one of the top cross-country gallopers in the country, is expected to preserve his unbeaten record over jumps this season.

T. B. McNeil has placed Amber Wine carefully with a view to having him at his peak for the AwapuniHawke’s Bay - Wellington Steeplechase treble. Consequently he has not sent him over country since the Trentham May meeting at which he recorded' an impressive success in the Newtown Steeplechase. On that occasion Amber Wine, although above himself in condition, ran his rivals off their feet in the last mile, winning impressively. His flat racing since indicates he has improved in condition.
