Tribunal Adjourns ‘Penthouse’ Hearing
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 15. The Indecent Publications Tribunal today adjourned an application for distribution of the illustrated men’s magazine, “Penthouse.”
The adjournment will allow the Justice Department to make written submissions. Mr R. A. Heron, representing the publishers. Trans World Publishers, Ltd., of London, said “Penthouse" had a circulation of 150,000 in the United Kingdom and would soon be published in Canada. It was intended to sell the magazine in New Zealand. As well as the usual cartoons, nude photographs and features on films and fashion, “Penthouse” included adult
I discussions on controversial subjects, said Mr Heron. He was concerned about the limerick, feature and also reported a “deterioration” in the quality of some features since the first issue of the magazine. Mr Heron asked the tribunal to consider the magazine as a whole and not to let any undesirable feature outweigh the benefits of the entire publication. It was a magazine to appeal to the wealthier person, he said.
