ISLANDERS IN ARMY

Assurance On Service (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 15. The Government has given an assurance to the Cook Islands’ Prime Minister (Mr A. Henry) that the 30 Cook Islanders now on basic training in Papakura Camp will not be required to serve overseas unless they specifically request it. This was confirmed by the Army in Auckland today. It said the clause in the enlistment papers signed by the Cook Islanders referring to overseas service had been deleted. The Government had also assured Mr Henry that the recruits, would not be permitted to volunteer to serve abroad until they had completed six months’ basic training.
