O’Callaghan Beaten In Billiards
The defeat of R. O’Callaghan was the major surprise in the first round of the Canterterbury amateur billiards championship.
After many seasons of championship endeavours, O’Callaghan could not contain the Woolston B grade player, R. Dowler, losing narrowly, 486-500. A fine exhibition of potting and losing hazard shots into the centre pocket highlighted Dowler’s performance. L. Glozier, a brilliant snooker player but not so accomplished at billiards, executed the former with a remarkable consistency in his encounter with G. Logan. Logan’s billiards skills were, vastly superior to Glozier’s, and he won, 500-361, but honours on the red ball went to Glozier. On two visits to the table he scored 45 points from 15 consecutive pots of the red ball into the corner pockets. This performance gave hint to his claims as a strong contender for the snooker championship. E. Simons, the present Canterbury champion, was untroubled to beat R. Higgs, 500 to 276. Results:—
