ROUGH PLAY
Policeman On Field
(N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, June 15. After an incident involving apparently rough play, a section of the crowd expressed its feelings and a seniorsergeant moved on to the field during the Rugby representative match between Taranaki and Wellington at Rugby Park, New Plymouth, today. The Taranaki forward, A. E. Smith, lying on the bottom of a ruck, was raked in the face, apparently by a Wellington forward. The incident was clearly visible to a section of the crowd in the main grandstand, and a loud booing broke out. A member of the New Plymouth police, Senior-Ser-geant B. C. Waller, on duty at the match, moved on to the field and spoke to the referee concerning the incident. After receiving attention on lhe ground. Smith was taken from the field and later had four stitches put in a cut on his chin. Play had not been in progress long before a Wellington forward was hurt and had to receive attention to the accompaniment of loud cheering and booing by the crowd in the grandstand.
