Busy Week Before Retirement

The Rt Rev. A. K. Warren’s last week as Bishop of Christchurch will be a busy one, culminating in a diocesan farewell at the Winter Garden on Thursday; June 29. Admission to the function will be by ticket only. Tickets have been issued to parishes in the diocese and to the organisations and bodies with which Bishop Warren and Mrs Warren have been connected.

The Mayor (Mr G. Manning), will speak on behalf of the city, the Chancellor of the diocese (Mr E. C. Champion), will speak on behalf of the laity, Mrs S. E. Woods will speak for the women of the diocese, and the Vicar-General (the Ven. H. M. Cocks), will speak on behalf of the clergy and will make a presentation. Mrs H. J. Eaton will present a spray to Mrs Warren, and items will be given by girls of Te Wai Pounamu College and the Christ’s College choir.

At 5.15 p.m. on the same day there will be a farewell service of Evensong in Christchurch Cathedral which will be open to all members of the public. Bishop Warren and Mrs Warren will attend a farewell ceremony at St Margaret’s College at 11 a.m. on June 17, and afterwards Bishop Warren will dedicate the Stephanie Young classroom block, which is nearly completed. Bishop Warren’s last confirmation service will be conducted at St. Paul’s Church, Papanui, at 7.30 p.m. on June 17.

On Sunday June 19, he will attend St John’s Church, Latimer Square, where he will be bidden farewell by Maori members of the church. At 2.30 p.m. he will preach in the Cathedral on the occasion of the celebration of the eighty-first anniversary of the founding of the Venerable Order of St John in New Zealand.

Bishop Warren is vicepresident of the Christchurch sub-centre of the St John Ambulance Association and president of the Canterbury and West Coast centre. He has been associated with St John workers for more than

20 years, and is a prelate of the order. The executive committee of St. George’s Hospital will hold a special meeting at the Hospital on June 22 to complete plans for the new surgical block, and afterwards an informal function will be held for members to express their appreciation of the work Bishop Warren has done as warden of the hospital. Tonight Bishop Warren will attend a dinner organised in his honour by the Church Property Trustees, the standing committee of the diocese and the Cathedral Chapter. Last night he attended a dinner held by the Christ’s College board of governors. Bishop Warren is warden of the college.
