N. Canterbury Child Survey

A survey aimed at revealing any link that may exist between soils and children's dental health is being carried out in the North Canterbury foothills from Oxford to Hororata. The survey is being made by Mr E. I. F. Pearce, of Wellington, who is the senior dental research officer in the Dental Research Unit of the New Zealand Medical Research Council. It is part of a national investigation which has already been carried out in certain North Island districts.

Questionnaires to parents have been sent out through schools in the area. The questionaires will be followed by an examination of the children’s teeth. The examinations will be carried out by Mr Pearce at the children’s own schools, and will be similar to a routine dental check. The questions deal with such matters as milk and water supplies, the source of vegetables, and (for farm children) the types of soil on their home property;
